How Unfortunate.

I'm still writing my damn cover letter. I'm almost done, but I'm not very satisfied with it. I think the most frustrating part is looking at my polite little paragraphs and recognizing how soulless they are. No personality at all. Even though I know it's safer to be more conservative, especially since I'm already too confident about my chances, I despise it. Sigh. I need to get back to something more creative. Or at least colorful. Maybe I just need to get drunk.

Liveblogging a Roasting Chicken

Tuesday, November 13, 2007

This time, I am determined not to undercook it like last time. So far, it looks good. Don't know how much longer it should sit in there, but if it gets too dry, oh well. Smokes the kitchen up pretty bad, but whatever. Pictures someday, I swear.

As I was looking for suggested cooking times on the internet, I happened across this delightful gem:

"There's a BIG BLOODY SPOT ON MY CHICKEN!! IT'S NOT DONE! WHY ISN'T IT DONE??? THE THERMOMETER SAID IT WAS DONE BUT IT'S GOT A BIG BLOODY SPOT. A BIG. BLOODY. SPOT. RIGHT THERE. EEEEEEEWWWWWW!!!"

Here's hoping mine turns out pristine. (30 minutes of resting left)

Beginning of Week Three

Monday, November 12, 2007

At home, my current food obsessions include chickpeas flavored with parmesan cheese, lemon, olive oil and salt. I just started my third can. It's my after work snack. G doesn't understand how sour cheese with beans could be appealing.

My other obsession is peas or corn with mint. G got me into it. So when he has a bowl of ice cream after dinner, I decide I need more vegetables. With mint.

There's a chicken in the fridge, covered in salt, waiting to be roasted tomorrow. I'm getting better about actually trying recipes, especially once I realized I needed a simple recipe with easy ingredients.

It's getting darker, but I only notice when I get home and feel the urge to get ready for bed. Like right now, it's 8pm, but it feels more like 10 or 11. Makes me go to bed earlier at least. I've been googling, and I think on the shortest day of the year, the sun will rise at 7:55 and set at 4:20. Damn. I think I'll be in SJ for that though, so it won't really matter for me.

Work's going well. Still not doing much of substance, but at least I did something different today. Data entry and some email-based training. I have my own cube now. It's weird having so much private space after working in a Japanese school staffroom.

I'm looking forward to my second Thanksgiving in America, and actually being awake for it. Last year, I think I came back from Japan the day before.

(I miss you nutcases in Japan though, for sure.)

Day 6

Free breakfast! And that's all that's worth mentioning.

Man, I'm just so tired all the time. I know my body is desperately trying to stay healthy, but going back to an eight hour work day is killing me. It's getting easier, sure, but I pretty much go home and just veg after work. Poor G. He's been putting up with me, and washing dishes and cleaning the bathroom, and I can barely talk.

I'm so going to bed now. At 10pm.

I am...

Friday, November 02, 2007

1. More disturbed that my sister will turn 25 next year than I am by the fact that I will turn 27. Well, okay, seeing it in print, 27 is a little unsettling.

2. Hoping I can compost my pumpkin, if only because I feel a little sad taking a knife to it and unceremoniously dumping it in the trash.

3. Looking for a big, brassy, obnoxious version of Aquarela do Brasil, because it got stuck in my head after watching Wall-E trailers.

4. In love with Wall-E. I haven't even seen Ratatouille yet, but Wall-E is adorable. I suggest you go watch the trailer.

5. Secretly fiddling with the control panel options on my work computer instead of reading mission statements and blah blah blah, pardon me, my brain is seeping out of my ear.

Day Five

Whoops, missed a day. Yesterday I felt like ass, so I lounged about. G's brother had tickets to see the Pipettes, so we were out late, and I passed out as soon as we got home. Good times though.

More work impressions: I've noticed I'm not as nervous as I was the last time I was sent on assignment. I think it's because I'm being thoroughly trained, and not just told to answer the phone. Also, I don't have to answer the phone! It's great. We all have our own phones, and we don't get general information calls. Training is going well, i just have to keep track of terminology and where to save things.

One small downer, it's harder to slip away and veg out. My last supervisor didn't seem to mind if I took a lonnng lunch, but paid attention to what time I showed up. This supervisor doesn't care at all about when I come in, but there's always someone around to notice if we're in or not. Eh, mostly I miss having interesting things to see on strolls. Like shops.

Ooh, and I had a small moment of pride this morning. It was stupid cold, with frost on my windshield that I had to scrape off, but I didn't find it unbearably cold. Kind of normal, actually. And how cold was it? 1 degree Celcius! (34F? 33F?) Thank you, Japan, for making me less of a weather weenie.

Day Three: TMI

Wednesday, October 31, 2007

The catered lunches from the restaurant that I love so much gives me horrible gas. Oh well, at least that'll deter me from buying lunch. I also figured out that they save the fancy food (like perhaps their fancy health standards) for the real restaurant. Sigh.

More training today, nothing exciting. I realized that I'm glad I'm no longer someone's assistant. Don't have to route phone calls, order lunches, arrange meetings...I was looking at a job posting to see if I was missing out on anything, and I really wasn't.

I did a mail merge today and it made me think of my first office job where I did mail merges all the fricking time. (If you don't know what they are, trust me, it's trivial.) Aw, feeling affection for Microsoft Word functions. I really need to get out more.

It's stupid cold in the mornings, and I know it'll just get worse. My car barely warms up by the time I park, poor thing. I watch the bikers strain uphill on the way home, and I'm glad I don't have to put up with that crap anymore. Hooray for the health nuts, at least I'm warm and will be more protected when some crazy broadsides me.

Oh, whoops. Earthquake near my grandparents' home yesterday. I should email them. I always feel guilty when I find out about these things late.

Ah, and Happy Halloween. We celebrated tonight by making a baked mac n' cheese and lounging around. Three trick-or-treaters stopped by, and luckily I saw them as they were puzzling over the three doorbells. Kind of a letdown, but hey. My first American Halloween in four years!

Day Two

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Today I learned more stuff. Feels pretty good to be working, but it's a lot to process. I wish it weren't so cold outside, otherwise I'd take a walk around the block to break up the monotony. I miss being in the retail core, where I could go shoe browsing at Nordstrom's next door.

I read a list of spelling, punctuation, and capitalization notes written specifically for this business. It made me feel more at home. Sometimes I see a spelling error, and I want to correct it.

I do miss my last office though. Example: team meeting today, I sat in the cube and read the company website for an hour and a half. (It was suggested I do it, but it really is useful.) In the last office, on my second day, I was in the team meeting, even though I was only supposed to be there for two weeks. On the fourth day, I went to a luncheon as part of that office team. Oh well. I can't have it all. At least I'm not endlessly scanning crap or taking notes about leaks and blackouts.

G is currently burning through Harry Potter 6. Cuts into hanging out time, but it's better than Dice Wars. Or one of the six or seven other games he's playing.

Serendipitous

Monday, October 29, 2007

My cubemate is going to get her wisdom teeth removed in the building I used to work in. I'm going to give her a note to drop off at my old office, to freak them out.

Impressions Day One: Everyone is great, lunch is catered by a restaurant I know and like, commute is surface streets, 20 minutes in the morning, 10 in the evening. I wish I could take the bus, but it's too much of a hassle--a transfer, or a long walk past the freeway on-ramps where the bums hang out. The manager doesn't care about me keeping super strict hours, and temps are usually hired after an interim period. My computer monitor is bigger than my TV at home. My photo ID doesn't look nearly as haggard as the last one I took (in Tokyo, hungover and shell-shocked). I'm excited about what I get to learn tomorrow, even though my brain has barely processed what I learned today. I signed an 11-page non-disclosure agreement, so I've probably said too much already Do Not Do Bad Things On Our Computers agreement, and I wanted to share the news.

We had GwynWong's meatloaf. Didn't take pictures, sorry. It was great, and someday we'll have a more complete spice collection that will make the meatloaf even better. Mmm.

Two bits of trivia: G can't remember the last time he had ketchup, and the last time he had meatloaf was with GwynWong. While I can't remember the last time I had meatloaf (probably at home, maybe even high school), I almost felt ashamed that I had been craving something comforting--and dare I say it, trashy--like that. I like ketchup on my eggs, but I never thought that was weird.

Now I'm full and meat coma-ed (2 pounds of meat is a lot!) with not much to say. Oh, except that my family is okay and the friends that evacuated are pretty sure their house is okay.

24 little hours

Friday, October 19, 2007

Sorry I haven't written. It got to the point where small life observations weren't interesting anymore, and I wanted to wait until something bigger happened. So here I am.

Yesterday I went in for an interview for a temp job. Well, more like a "temp with full intentions to hire but first we're going to cover our asses and make sure you fit here" job. (Actually, the guy who was interviewing me asked what the temp agency told me, because he didn't know. He just told them to put whatever they put last time. Hah.) I'm actually okay with temp-to-hire positions. In fact, I wish more jobs were like that, where you can try it out, see if you like it, and if you don't, you can leave after three months without it really blemishing your work history. Or maybe it does, I don't know.

Anyway.

So I went to the interview, and it was okay. I'm not that interested in the job, other than the fact that it paid more than the last one. (Hey, I'm a temp, I'll take what I can get.) It's got a crappy commute over a floating bridge, which *shuts down* if it gets too windy (which is a legitimate concern), and the traffic just sucks in general. Sucks almost to Angelino standards. For example, yesterday I left at 9:40am, in the rain, and it took me 45 minutes to drive 10 miles. On the way home at 10:30am, it took 17. Almost all of it was freeway driving.

The interview went okay. I know I slipped in a few places, but like I said, not that concerned. They seemed eager to hire someone, so I'd probably get the job. I went home feeling sorry for myself because I felt like I was settling, even though I don't have a clear idea of what I want. Eventually I gave in and decided to stop being lame about it. Maybe it'll be interesting. At least I'll learn something new. Paying rent and saving up until I know what I want is good, right?

Well, as I was getting ready for bed last night, I noticed I had a voice mail. Missed call at 4pm. Whoops. Turns out the voice mail is from a woman who works for the temp agency at a company that I applied for (through the temp agency) *six months ago*. (Companies have in-house temp agency workers? Crazy.)

I called her this morning, an hour ago. She's looking to fill a position, no interview necessary, am I interested? (Hell yes.) Well great. Call the temp agency's main office and work out the details.

Details worked out, I start Monday. It happened so quickly I kept stalling when I was talking to the temp agency, convinced that I had overlooked something, that maybe the job is terrible (doubtful) or there's a high turnover rate (nope, most people are hired after their contract is up).

So in a 24-hour period, I interviewed with one company, and got hired by another. Crazy, huh? I'm still overwhelmed, but mostly I'm just deeply relieved that I'm going back to work. And that I can pay my rent. ::good sigh::

Hey D, get this: G and I met this guy while hanging a giant kimono at City Hall. Lived a few years in Japan, did some eikaiwa, did some other teaching job, and has done most of the 88 (temple pilgrimage in Shikoku). And he invited us over for a movie tonight. We watched After Life, which was pretty awesome. Makes me want to watch more movies. Too bad this guy is going to Japan for a month to buy tea or something. (That's his business, selling tea wholesale.)

Oh right, and why should D be interested? He did the Tokushima leg of the 88 in *ONE DAY*. ONE DAY! He never saw the porno shack, and probably didn't stop to take pictures, but he did it in a day, on foot. Wearing geta. (wooden sandals, or until they wore out and he went barefoot.) That's hardcore man.

He'll finish up someday, so if anyone over there is interested in meeting this guy, let me know. He's pretty decent.

ONE DAY! Man.

Here I present the Safe Beige Couch. I intend to get some bright stuff...eventually. But for now, I can breathe easier, knowing that I won't clash horribly every time I sit on my couch. Good thing I rarely wear khaki.

The other pictures show the well-dressed Target bench, G's new desk, and our white TV on our white TV stand. Opinions, anyone?

Color Shock. (Or, D would be proud.)

Hello goldfish! Hello kid with eye!

So we went to Ikea again. Went yesterday, went the week before. G now has a desk, some drawers, and he also bought the sofa. Man. The Sofa. I'm grateful he put the money down for it, but to be honest, I'm in shock. Yes, I chose the color (only after much agonizing), yes I was hopeful that it would work, but now...it's just so damn red. Everything else is neutral, because I hadn't committed to colors yet. (I have blue accessories because I was hoping to go for teals and browns.) Even G was nice and bought a lighter colored desk because I'm afraid that dark furniture will make the room feel smaller.

So, people who have been pestering me about posting, what do you think? Am I just freaking out, or is it really too dominating? It's not the most pleasant red. I took a lot of pictures to try and capture this. Leans just a bit towards orange. Or is it okay, and I just need more red friendly accessories? Here's the web page. I'm leaning towards something nice and safe like beige. That would play much nicer with my teal pillow cases that I love:

The big pillow is a zabuton and will live on the floor. The small pillow I just love.

Yep, the recliner's still there. Just might stay there too.

There's G's J-textbook in the corner. He's taking one class so far, from 11:30-12:20, every day.
How's that for inconvenient?

And if it really is a bad idea, no guilt about that. We can exchange the cover (the couch stays, dammit--I want that couch) because we have to return a tv stand. There are two sizes of that particular tv stand, and we got the larger one. 66". Bleh.

On a happier note, G splurged on some LEDs that pleasantly fade from color to color. He's thinking about pimping out the kitchen, or maybe the living room, or heck, both. They're like grown-up Christmas lights, and I love them.

So I'm imploring you, (all three or four of you), help me. Make me feel better or convince me to change it. Right now I'm just uncomfortable about it. Sad.

August was a busy month.

Sunday, September 02, 2007

Hello blog-friends, sorry about neglecting y'alls.

I was temping, blue-eyed Adalew came to visit, Kr. and her boyf came to visit, life was busy. Currently I've been hanging out with JH and RL who are in town for the weekend. (That ups the total number of visiting JETs to 5! Gwyn, you're next.) Tomorrow will be troll and salmon day (Fremont and the Ballard fish ladders). I'm currently unemployed and will be heading down to SoCal next week with boyfriend in tow. High school friend's wedding. I can't wait to introduce him.

Ah yes, and August was busy because I have my koibito back. Sorry. He has stocked my fridge well (cheese and pesto), and encouraged me to clean up more often. He does my endless supply of dishes and brought over his PS2. We've been watching Azumanga Daioh, which is an anime about high school students. Kind of wacky, but highly natsukashii. It's comforting to see the classrooms again, even in cartoon form.

So far the apartment doesn't seem too small with him around, and I'm definitely adding more homey touches to the place (a few plants and more clutter). Pictures are an order, but while the weather is nice and I'm not employed, I won't be spending much time on the computer. Sorry folks.

Ah yes, and I also have a new hobby, geocaching. Think of it as scavenger hunting with a GPS device. Downright addictive for me. There will be a post about that too, someday.

On the bus

Thursday, August 16, 2007

This dude sits down next to me. He's wearing a leather jacket. It's not that cold out, but maybe he was planning for cooler weather. Fine.

And then he gets off the bus. I look up, and realize that he is complementing his leather jacket with a pair of plaid bermuda shorts. Ew.

After I got off the bus, I passed a Word of the Week. I've already forgotten what that word was (I took a picture, I'll upload it eventually...), but I'm glad I've got some quirky stuff in my neighborhood.

This morning on Facebook, I learned that G kind of has a successor at Shiun, his base school. It's a huge school on the western side of Tak. His successor's base school is IN TONOSHO. Probably RL's position. Holy cow. That poor girl will have to bike to the ferry, ferry from Tonosho and then bike to Shiun 80 times next year. I sincerely hope those days are Fridays, so she can just stick around town for the weekend, or that she makes a good friend in the city where she can crash. That is so lame. They should totally keep G's apartment for her to stay at every now and then.

So how much longer do you think the Program will last in home sweet Kag? Sheesh.

Today I accidentally spoke in Portuguese.

Monday, July 16, 2007

My supervisor is Portuguese. Her mom calls her at work, and I've taken a few of these calls. After a few experiences with awkward language barriers, today it finally occurred to me that Portuguese is pretty similar to Spanish. So when she called for the second time today, I somehow managed to eke out Uno momento...ahora no está aquí with my brain trying really hard not to sneak in some Japanese. And it worked! Later my supervisor said that her mom is convinced that I spoke in Portuguese to her. Har har. Turns out the Portuguese version is pretty close to the Spanish version, but either way, hooray! I remember something from high school!

Other than that, today was definitely a Monday at work, and everyone felt it. I like it when everyone feels the way I do. Less guilt that way. I mean, sure I could've gone to bed early last night, but staying out until 10pm geocaching is way more fun than, oh...say...cleaning and doing laundry and going to bed on time. Wouldn't you agree?

On the bus home today, I sat next to a girl with an armband tattoo. I think I called it cute. Graciously, she said thank you and went back to her own little world. Whoops. You're not supposed to call tattoos cute, are you? But I couldn't help it. She had Alice in Wonderland drawings wrapped around her arms. Both of them, I noticed when she got off the bus. Possibly engravings from an old book, and they were so cool. She was wearing a blue dress with a funky blue pattern, with scuffed black boots. She was very much a modern Seattle Alice.

Sourdough Bread (and the typical tangents.)

Saturday, July 14, 2007

I bought sourdough bread (should've been something sweeter like french, but oh well) and avacados. Guess what I'll be eating for the next few days? Yum Yum Yum. (Man, that was Tuesday I had avacado on bread? Damn, this week went by fast.)

Eating sourdough bread makes me think of this one friend of mine who only ate sourdough bread. Only. Didn't matter what kind, if it was bagged and sliced, or crusty in a paper bag, but it was always sourdough. I'd always sneak a slice when we hung out, because I knew it'd be gone in a day or two. (Who goes through a loaf of bread in two days??) Funny that I thought of that.

Today was a "buy stuff" day. Not exactly retail therapy--although I came home with some neat stuff--just picking up stuff here and there. Curtains for the closet (not sure if I like them), a fan (a nice fan!), food...all that plus G's box which arrived yesterday, and my apartment is trashed. Don't worry, I took pictures, and I'll post them later.

(Dude, he sent me my hair dryer. Uhm, I guess it'll be nice to have if my brand new one ever breaks. And to be fair, I might've asked him to send it to me ages and ages ago. He also sent me candy, D's spice shaker she bought for my birthday, oh, two years ago?, and a kimono. A kimono! I don't know how to dress myself in a kimono! And I don't have the right obi! Or tabi! Sigh. It's pretty though.)

Things I ate today.

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Today I had avocado on crusty bread drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with salt. I've never thought of that before (because I'm not exactly a food experimenter, no surprise there), but it was really really good. I'm totally having that for dinner someday soon. This guy in the office brought it in because he had some avocados that needed to be eaten. Hooray!

And another office food story: In the office is a bowl of candy. I had some twizzlers, and I would like to report that I hate them even more now than before I went to Japan. Ugh. Give me raw fish organs any day over twizzlers. I guess I just wanted to know if they tasted the same...but they don't. They taste worse.

No concept of time.

It's July? Almost mid-July? I had no idea. I mean, I could tell you the date if I had to--I date stuff at work--but it doesn't really sink in. The weather is foreign again, and all the indications of summer just aren't here. No humidity...

(here I walked away, found a couple of those summer bells that disappointingly don't have very nice chimes, and hung them in my bathroom, because there are unused hooks in the bathroom)

no summer icons (goldfish, tea commercials with clinky ice, suika bars...), zaru udon (although I tried today, I didn't try hard enough, and just had lukewarm udon), ice cold green tea (I should really just make my own...), no hellish classes to teach...wait what? Grr.

I keep fighting it, wishing I was meant for grander things, but I really think I need to be a teacher. I crave the school year patterns, the crapload of interaction, hell, the lesson plans too. Or maybe I just crave the familiarity of it, and I miss the intense buzz of students. Uhhuh.

I'm done with this entry. I keep getting up to do other things. Like right now, I'm trying to brew enough genmaicha (brown rice tea) for a thermos with only a small tea strainer.

G might be home in 12 days! That's insane!

I did it!

Wednesday, July 04, 2007

When I told my friend that I was going to try and go to Gasworks Park to watch the fireworks, his comment was, "It's a clusterfuck."

One of the Seattle blogs describes it as "Fuck Wallingford Day," because 60,000 people (and I assume that's a guess) swarm Wallingford neighborhood. For the record though, that blogger was more than a bit miffed because some Wallingford residents didn't want summer concerts at Gasworks Park, blah blah, snipe snipe, NIMBY righteousness, etc.

Well, I did it, and it wasn't so bad. I sat on top of Kite Hill, which was nice and steep, so no one blocked my view. Some people weren't so fortunate and sat right behind the paved path, which became crowded with standing people. This obnoxious older woman tried to shame them into sitting down, but all she managed to do was annoy me.

There was an inflatable Statue of Liberty head. I thought it was silly.

Oh! And no good pictures, because I don't know where my camera is! Rarg! I was super prepared: bottle of water, couple extra layers, book, snacks...and I didn't take my camera! I think (hope) it's at work, and that it didn't get pinched from my bag. That would suck a lot. I'll find out tomorrow.

The show opened with a giant military helicopter flying an American flag around the lake. That was awesome. I'm not so into the military or flag flying, but it was unique.

There were some really awesome fireworks: the typical neat ones--the smiley faces, hearts, Saturns--but they also had some that I had never seen. Cubes! Well, round cubes. And these awesome ones that looked like a single strand of icicle lights that got launched into the air and slowly floated down. And these jellyfish rocket things, that slowly floated up. Those two were my favorites.

And the music was interesting too. They opened with "America" ("O beautiful..."), and I assume it was Ray Charles' version, but I don't know for sure. Then it was all non-patriotic music. U2's "Beautiful Day," "Also Sprach Zarathustra," "Tequila," that one Austin Powers instrumental (I don't feel like googling for it), Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon," (excellent excuse to use the Saturn and star fireworks) "Bohemian Rhapsody," for goodness sake! (They used the smiley faces for all the background voices. It was fun.) They closed with "When You Wish Upon a Star" (Disney? kind of strange), and "Stars and Stripes Forever." Or at least I'm pretty sure that's what it's called.

Notice a trend with the music? Two patriotic songs. Two! Not sure if that's the style these days, or if it's just this particular show, or if it's Seattle being liberal. I enjoyed being able to sing along.

The crowds were super crazy, but I knew exactly where I wanted to go, and I showed up around 7:45pm to get a seat for the 10pm show. I would probably try to get there at 7 or maybe earlier if I was going in a group. It was pretty easy doing it alone though. I didn't time my walk there, but it only took 42 minutes to walk (almost 2 miles) home. Further than I thought, but sure beats the parking and traffic mess.

I'm glad I went, and I would definitely go again next year. Come visit if you feel like braving the crowds and doing a two-mile walk home. Hehe. I'll probably still be here.

Yay, I'm happy now. And this Saturday I'm going to a wedding in California! Everything is great. Oh wait, except for the camera thing. Grarg-ate. Yes, that's it. Goodnight!

Dare I?

Tuesday, July 03, 2007

Look at this insanity:

That's where I want to go watch fireworks tomorrow night, by myself. Shit. I knew it was going to be bad, but seeing a picture makes it worse. And I'm doing it alone--no one to watch my space, no one to keep me company. (Hey, my only other choice was to go to G's uncle's cabin in the woods? countryside? err, remoteness with G's parents, but not his brother. No thanks.) While I'm tempted to tough it out, it means no bathroom breaks from the time I find a place to sit (or trusting strangers...hmm) until around 11pm, when I walk home. I dunno man.

And I'm not sitting at home on the 4th. I had a really shitty 4th when I was 18, and since then, I've disliked the holiday because of the associations. Well, there was one quaint year in Wyoming, but overall, lame. I have memories of sitting in my college apartment, attempting to write a paper while the neighbors partied it up. So I'm not going to sit at home, even if it means jogging block to block trying to find a good view.

Wish me luck.

Oh ho, I am so clever. But then again, you'll see this before you see my bus rant. Oh well.

Heard the buzz for Ratatouille yet? Perfect timing with all the Food Network addicts around.

Here's a 9-minute clip, in case you missed it.

Bus Rant.

Here's my warning: This is a bloated post full of tiny things that don't matter. Perhaps you should go read a book instead. Now on we go.

Today I was cranky when I got on the bus, because my feet are tired of shitty shoes and I can't seem to find a pair to replace them with. And I spent most of my time today walking door to door in the building, trying to give out emergency handbooks and no one was there. And most of those floors were stuffy, warm and smelled (like paint or just musty old building).

So I get on the bus, and I have to sit next to this girl who coughed with her mouth open and constantly wiped her nose with her fingers. No sniffing, just constant wiping. Wipe wipe wipe, right next to me. And, because she was homely, that irritated me even more. She had a mopey face that suggested professional doormat. Some skewed logic tells me that it's okay to belittle pretty people with bad habits, but not mousey people. (Later, I found she had a loud valley girl voice because she had a buoyant conversation with her friend about whether or not they would go for a walk when she got home.) She was reading a book called "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle." Great. An unhygienic, homely hippie. I moved as soon as a full seat opened up.

I tried to distract myself by watching other people. Cute young Asian family gets on. Young-ish parents, adorable little boy. Most likely Japanese, considering dad and son both wore Ichiro jerseys. Awww.

A woman talks on her cell with someone (hopefully one of her offspring, and not a friend or husband, judging from the tone) about not overexerting themselves while running and the beef jerky multipack she bought from Trader Joe's. Do they want one? Because she can get them still. Etc. etc. Doting is cute, but not when I can't block you out. I don't know why I didn't plug in my ipod. Sometimes I'm just not in the mood.

There's a chubby dude with a face that's painfully ducklike. Thinking back to all the kids I didn't like in elementary, junior, or high school, I can't think of one that was as odd-looking as Duck Dude. I begin to wonder if this bus passes a special school like my 'cho bus did. Seriously. Duck dude, homely hippie...there's a scruffy looking white woman wearing a JANM t-shirt (Japanese American National Museum), which is odd, considering JANM is in LA, but she could just be one of the usual bus crazies.

Anyway, duck dude pulls the bus signal (does it have a real name?), and the bus driver roars past his stop, because this is the express bus (shaves my commute from 40 to 30 minutes). Still cranky, I decide that if I was a bus driver, I would do what this bus driver does: speed up as he passes the stop someone requests. True, the bus driver has an accent, doesn't enunciate, and doesn't use his microphone, but...oh there's no but. He deserves to be slightly passive-aggressive if he drives a bus all day. Not slowing down for people running for the bus is lame, but following your route with a touch of attitude is okay in my book.

Poor duck dude goes to chat with the bus driver. He has to get off at a stop that is mostly residential, and the other people that got off the bus are already scattering home. The bus stop he wants isn't very obvious. He gets off the bus with a terribly out-of-scale tourist map. Not even a bus route map. As the bus pulls away, he's asking the Japanese family something, and the dad shrugs. I'm almost tempted to get off the bus to help him out, but my feet hurt, and I don't want to risk him being a total mouth breather. I think about how he might enjoy seeing the troll (which is actually almost right under him), and how he looked completely lost, and I tried to comfort myself with the knowledge that when he gets home, he'll be proud that he made it. I also tried to block out the thought that suggested duck dude was the type to go home so traumatized, that he won't ride the bus again for months.

Poor duck dude. I hope someone took care of him.

The white walls are driving me crazy. Today I think I decided what I want to do with my little un-hallway. My dad hung the lanterns for me, and even rigged all the light cords. All I have to do is find light bulbs that will fit. Did you know that those little candle shaped bulbs aren't supposed to be hung upside down? Dammmmit. I need to visit Home Depot and just look at every damn bulb they sell.

Look! The vacuum cleaner that I haven't tried out yet!

Turquoise first, red in the closet.
But redder than that scarf I hung to test.

I think I want to put a red curtain on the left side to cover the closet, and put a deep but bright teal-turquoise curtain on the right side(to curtain off the kitchen when I cook). Hopefully, I can find a blue curtain that somewhat matches my big lantern. The red curtain will be closed most of the time, and the turquoise one will be open most of the time. I like the idea of a red curtain on the kitchen side, or any bright color, but I'm also getting very attached to the tranquil blues and sea greens in the kitchen. I'm not a bright riot-of-colors person, but like I said, the whiteness is getting to me. And it's such a small space, I feel like I can get away with it.

I'm still attached to greens in the bedroom, but I need to find curtains and a bedspread or comforter to seal the deal. Well, I think the curtains will be the clincher. I think the bedding will just be chosen spontaneous, and I keep leaning towards blue sheets anyway.

No decision on the living room yet. But it might end up being browns and neutrals, and I kind of want to use light, warm colors because it's such a dark room. My furniture is in the following colors: three different kinds of wood, bright white, and brown-black. And that comfy pink recliner. So much for a well-designed living room.

Here, have some pictures!

Man I'm behind on the picture updates. I guess that's what happens when I actually have a job. Ha.

Someday she's gonna do something spectacular.

I wish you could meet my sister. Sure we're similar--we're sisters--but she's got this snide, cruel wit that I lost after living in Japan (although sometimes I wonder if I ever had the same burning rage she has sometimes). And she blogs. Migrated to myspace awhile back if you didn't notice. I don't link to her because she likes to use my comment section for catharsis, but I do encourage you to check out her writing. For example, here's a gem from today's entry:

For some reason, I feel like I'm not living up to my potential. Don't get me wrong. I love my boss and would jump in front of a train to save her, and I love my job, because I have lots of perks/freedom… but I'm not happy-go-lucky about working. On the slow days, I find myself wasting away at an office job, counting down the hours until 5:00pm. Waiting for work to be over, only to go home and recuperate for the next work day. It's the endless cycle of work. Apparently, there are supposed to be enough "good things" in life to balance this all out. With the exception of my "once-a-week," I have yet to find them.

Then I start panicking. If I don't like where I am, why not find somewhere else? No, I like where I am, I'm just afraid of what other people think of where I am. It's all really shitty. Am I wasting my life away? Fuck. I'm chaotically running around in terror. The end is near! What am I doing with my life? Is this all there is to life? Simply wash, rinse, and repeat? Why am I not out saving the world?

Ding!

It's 5:00pm.

Seriously, someday she's going to figure it all out and write something that will dazzle the world. It's only a matter of time.

Decorating is frustrating.

Sunday, June 24, 2007

I spend a lot of time looking at design blogs, trying to figure out how to decorate my apartment. And I see these great color schemes, with the base colors with the pretty accessories in some unimaginably perfect accent color. So do people go out and buy all those little vases and trinkets all at once? Or do they accumulate them one by one? Doing it the first way seems like a big waste of money to me. On top of that, I like my trinkets to have meaning...or at least be really awesome. As for the other way, building the perfect collection of Blue Things piece by piece seems too slow to me. Especially since I take forever to make decisions.

I'm just getting so tired of these white walls.

Thoughts for Saturday.

Saturday, June 23, 2007

Today I didn't change out of my pajamas until 8pm. It was a pretty great day. I washed more dishes (still working through the boxes), played on the internet, cleaned a little. It was gray and a little chilly, so I didn't feel like being out and about. Then suddenly, the sun broke through the clouds and everything was golden and I felt guilty for being inside all day. That was at 7:45pm.

I sat in my sunny spot and soaked in the sun until the guilt forced me outside. It's supposed to be raining tomorrow. No clue what kind of rain (tolerable drizzle or irksome steady patters), but 70% means rain. So I got dressed and went for a walk. Just wandered down streets. I stopped in a few parks (it's really lame using the swings by yourself when there's other people around), and rewarded myself with a drive-in burger on the way home.

I tried my very best to *stroll*, but I kept speeding up. Too damn efficient. Or impatient. Or insecure, even. Strolling by myself makes me feel alone.

I also realized how bored I am these days. I play less solitaire, sure, but I find myself getting caught up in small things. Explaining everything (to myself or whoever I con into calling me ::cough:: G), thinking about everything. Today I remembered what Shodoshima N's watch looks like. Cracked face with a moon dial. My brain remembered that! I don't remember a single calculus equation, but I can remember my friend's watch. Sheesh.

Man, speaking of G, he doesn't have a ticket home yet! He almost did, but there was a miscommunication with his supervisor. Surprise surprise. L, I'm sure you've already heard the stupid story so I'll stop there, but man. For awhile I concerned that I didn't have enough time to make my apartment presentable, and now I'm--well...relieved that I might have a few more days, but I still want to know when he's coming home!

The building I work in

Thursday, June 21, 2007

I'm very lucky that I snagged a temp job in a friendly office in a unique building, with a supervisor that keeps extending my contract. My supervisor has been with the building for seven years, and two of the engineers have been there even longer. And the chief engineer has only been there a few years, but he's the type of guy who would remember everything anyway.

So here are the cool things I've learned:

They still have the original mail box. There's a chute that stretches all the way up to the 18th floor. I'm totally going to mail a few postcards from there, just to drop them down the chute. So, if you get a postcard with severely dinged corners, that's because it was dropped 10 stories down to the first floor.

There's an abstract painting in the lobby, with math equations and some abstract shapes that look like butterflies according to the engineer's kids. Uh huh. It's got good colors--not something I'd hang in my apartment--but the funny story is that originally, someone proposed that it should be a painting of a giant clam in that space. Like a still life. Of a giant clam.

When the building first went up, they didn't have enough money and only built half of it. Seriously. 18 floors on one half, two floors on the other. I can't remember when...the 20s? The 30s? I haven't read the history boards close enough. Anyway, in the 50s, they decided to finish it, in that sleek modern lameness on the left. Such a bummer. I think it's cute that the people I work with all take it a little personally that the building turned out half lame.

I got to see a floor that was being demolished. That was cool. All open space with pipes and poles and shattered brick. They do this every time a new tenant moves in and wants to rearrange the layout of their space.

Oh right, I'm temping. It's good enough, but it makes me miss teaching. This is a good thing: for once I actually have an opinion about how I want to make my money. I'll be here for 3 or 4 weeks. If I'm here for a full month, that'll cover rent and basic expenses through August. So, hooray for temping!

The only downside is that now the weeks go by really fast. Especially this week. I get up, leave at 7:30, return around 5:45pm, unwind until 10, and then go to bed at 11. I don't know why I was never this disciplined in Japan. Well, I have a few guesses (didn't really interact in the staff room and thus didn't look forward to going to work, had more responsibilities, which meant more last minute prep at home, oh right, and all the partying, trips to and from Tak, actual social life...right. That's why.)

Meh. Sure beats sitting at home stagnating.

Other thoughts for the day:

I need to learn that I need to be productive no matter what the weather is like. Gray tends to be an excuse to bundle up at home while bright blue weather is so rare that I just have to get outside.

America is pretty great: today I went to lunch with the chief engineer and two other engineers from the office I'm working in. That'd be like having lunch with kyoto-sensei, the grounds keeper, and some random other guy teacher. Even if I spoke flawless Japanese, I never could've pulled that off in the 'cho.

Stupid cream-colored carpet shows every single hair I've shed. At least I could sweep it aside when I had tatami.

I will not exercise...

...until I get a permanent job. Why? Yesterday I went for a five-ish mile walk and today I was hungry all day. I barely changed out of my work clothes before I ate my lunch leftovers (pastrami on rye!) and the lunch I was supposed to eat (pb&j). I know I'm not that poor, but I feel like I eat twice as much when I exercise and I'd rather not.

Now it's time for a slice of lasagna--one of my father's final gifts before he went home last week.

Tentacles!

Monday, June 18, 2007

That would be 8pm sunlight, for the record.

I bought myself three air plants (tillandsias) yesterday. Air plants don't need soil, just a good soak every now and then. Lowwww maintenance. Just like the yellow kalanchoe that my dad bought me. (Aww.)

But yeah. Tillandsias! They come in all sorts of shapes, but I like the squiggly ones the best. They kind of look like misfit green onions. I enjoy watching them. I feel like they're breathing (like actually inhaling and exhaling) when I'm not looking. Sometimes I'm tempted to glue googly eyes on to make them look more squidlike.

Oh tentacles. That's another interest I wanted to add to my facebook list, but putting tentacles down as an interest is just begging for trouble. But I just do! Octopi, squid (not only do I own a squid shirt, but I also just bought a jellyfish one...), Dale Chihuly stuff, these plants are just an extension of that.

So D, does the plant freak you out? I'm curious.

Wtf: Boob jobs for the Unemployed??

Saturday, June 16, 2007

I guess I could post real articles that mean something. But Willywop, Spaid, and Gwyn keep us covered, so I'll just keep posting dumb stories that raise my blood pressure. For example:

A BBC article ("I love my new C cup breasts") about a new service that makes professional plastic surgery affordable to the unemployed.

At first I was a bit outraged--should people with low incomes be spending their money on boob jobs? But then I thought about it--plastic surgery can do good things: Project Smile, for one. No wait. Project Smile collects teddy bears for cops to give to kids they pull out of bad situations. I mean Operation Smile. You know, the one that fixes cleft palates.

Anyway, I went to the plastic surgery site to prevent myself from getting all righteous and ranty. And just ended up getting righteous and ranty: It really is just about boob jobs for poor people. The program was implemented to keep people from leaving the country for a risky cheap foreign operation. (Would these people be determined enough to save enough money for a trip abroad and an operation?) No talk of replacement breasts for cancer survivors, or even breast reductions, which could give them a bit of credit. But they do have full frontal before and after shots, along with the option of a natural look. (Now I'll bet you'll click the link.)

The woman in the article? Unemployed single mother of two. Of Two! And she just shelled out $8400 USD ($8970 Canadian) for bigger boobs. And she's not a cancer survivor either. Cute smile, 26, (Unemployed with Two Kids! It irks me.) spent her money on a boob job. Stunning. Part of me likes to hope that she'll become more confident, which will lead to a better interview, which will lead to a real job. But the rest of me just thinks she'll become a hit at the local pubs. Ugh.

Did I tell you I roasted (most of) a chicken? (It was already cut, not the whole bird.) Not only did I succeed without setting anything on fire, it tasted effin' awesome. I nearly passed out after I gorged on potatoes that had soaked in butter and chicken grease. I made plenty of mistakes, but I was pleased that I didn't freak out (especially since I learned how to roast chicken when I was 10).

Hello delicious. The skin was all crackly and buttery. So great.

My poor potatoes didn't turn out as pretty.
But they tasted just like chicken grease. Mmm.

Too lazy to make a salad. The veggies are called "fiesta mix."
I find the beans hilarious. And delicious.
But seriously, crinkle-cut carrots are not my definition of a fiesta.

Well, it's new to you.

Five years ago, I was posting on this blog. I've been (sporadically) blogging for over five years! Bake me a cake. All that's offline now, but here's an amusing entry. If you ever thought I was high-strung in the past couple years, imagine how I was during college (or even worse, high school):

Deliciously Dente-de-lion.
Today i am positively daffodilian. It was a good day, where i got to read a good book and learn more photoshop, and now, as the weight of the work ahead is starting to cloud over my lovely day, I'm starting to wish for dandelion wine again. How I'd love to make it, or at least try a sip of it, and though a small part of me knows that it will taste terrible and my romantic notions will be shattered, curiosity and anticipation drive me on.

Imagine, spending a long day in the early summer gathering dandelions and bottling it up...silly silly literary fairy tales. But being the naive little bunny I am sometimes, I find myself desiring a cool slice of the midwest, or the south--Kentucky cooking like i researched in, was it fifth grade? Having a grandmother rattle off the foods of her hometown, and listening rapt, for she was painting exotic foods for me--grits and collard greens are, by experience, more exciting than sushi and egg rolls ever will be. Sure for every dusty gas station with the forlorn jalopy and high-grown grass there's a white hood and a staunch tradition of Life As It Should Be, but in my bubble, everything is rose-colored, and everything is to be savored.

My apartment is full.

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

It's Tuesday, and my dad went home earlier today. It was fun having him around. He cooked me breakfast yesterday (eggs and potatoes!) and today (pancakes!). The perks of having a handyman, chauffeur, and personal chef aside, his presence made me realize how alone I've been. Not exactly lonely--I always found something to do on my own, even if it was just walking around the lake again--just solitary. I'd notice it when I'd chat with store clerks a little more than I needed to, but it's even more apparent now. It's funny, even though I keep saying how much I like living alone, I'm looking forward to G moving in.

I have lots of stories to share, but I'm really tired, and I'm just trying to keep myself awake long enough so I don't wake up at 3am or something frustrating like that. But here's your brief update: I now have a desk and desk chair, laundry hamper, full length mirror (unfortunately hung for my height, so that needs to be fixed...) beside table, sheets that fit my bed, place mats that fit the kitchen color scheme, and a frickin' drill. Man, I protested long and hard, but my dad bought one anyway. But I'll write more about that later.

Tomorrow I'm going to see West Side Story! This is where you can feel a touch superior, L. At least you spend your money that shouldn't be spent on tangible items. But seriously, look at this theater! I went to Les Mis' here, and I think I was more impressed by the theater.

G is coming home in 40 days! Somehow it went from being "about two months" to almost a month. I fluctuate between being absolutely elated and moderately petrified.

Also D, photos of the Lush factory in BC. (ahem, they're not mine)

Colors?

Friday, June 08, 2007

Too beachy for kitchen colors? I like the way the white, blue gray and light green interact. Ignore the sand and the house colors. But I'm not sure how these colors will transfer to fabrics.

Don't look at the yellow. But I like how they didn't paint the walls to add color. Unfortunately, I don't like the idea of a white sofa. And I don't have that much natural light in my living room. So what about putting these colors in the bedroom, but with green?

State of the Apartment 6.08.07

And while I'm thinking about it, here's the current state of my apartment. Cleaner than my Japan apartment ever was, and still pretty empty.

My floor cushion is larger than the table.
Now that I have internet, I only seem to use it for my food pictures. Hehe.

Maybe put a lamp on top of the dresser?
Or hang something from the ceiling?

Bedside table on the left side, with a lamp.(See post below on lamp choices.)
Also, I'll make my bed once I have real bed linens, thank you very much.

Target bench and adopted recliner.
Curse the walls for not being a true white.

Opinions?

More fabulous stuff from Ikea. I'm looking for a bedside table lamp (the top three) and a light for the dark corner on top of my dresser (bottom three). What do you think? Will there be problems with styles clashing?

Also, do I need a headboard for my bed? All of my beds after moving out had tall-ish frames that made headboards unnecessary.

Platform beds and other nonsense.

I don't get them. I mean, they're pretty and sleek and probably the best futon-real bed hybrid, but the edge? Wouldn't you always smack your shin when you got into bed? Or would you leap into bed? Step up? (Hee hee.) And I would miss the storage space under the bed.

I've been picking out more Ikea furniture. Save for a few items (target bench, G's bed, hand-me-down recliner, kitchen table and chairs), my entire apartment will be furnished by Ikea. It's economical and saves me the time of combing through craigslist I suppose, but I'm also afraid that my apartment will look like a dorm because all the furniture matches. It's frustrating picking out stuff without knowing what colors I want to use (everything's currently a light beech so it doesn't make the room seem smaller). It helps that my dad is coming up this weekend with the rest of my stuff. More knick knacks and some stuff to put on the walls. Oh yeah, and my kitchen table, coffee table, stand mixer, and a ton of other stuff I don't want to think about cluttering up my precious space.

Ganked from virtual tourist, who wants a link if I use the photo. ehhh...

I think I'll put my Vietnamese lanterns in the little un-hall space that joins the bathroom, living room, and kitchen. It'll be a color riot (teal, purple and green), but I want to use them without making my (entire) apartment look all Oriental. Or hippy-ish. Or does simply using them make everything look too exotic? I've been combing the design blogs, and I've only seen one room use Asian lanterns, and it was the workspace for a crafty woman who runs a shop called Double Happiness Designs. While I still haven't decided how I feel about Caucasian women running Asian-themed shops, her stuff isn't that bad, she doesn't seem to be an Asia-phile (is there a real word for that?), and her room doesn't seem that Oriental.

While I was researching light bulbs for my lanterns, I found a wikipedia entry on the (supposed) World's Longest Lasting Light Bulb. It's kind of silly that it would be this famous (they even have a webcam for it), but it also totally seems like something Japan would do. Except if this were Japan, there'd be a mascot.

I get it, but my brain still goes into overdrive when I glance at it. Add it to the list of things that I would covet if you owned, but I would never want to own myself. (designed by Max Longin)

Also? I just saw a pillow in the shape of a fried egg. I think it's kind of cute. If I had more space for cute pillows, I'd probably buy it...IF IT DIDN'T COST $66 FOR THE SMALL ONE, $99 FOR THE LARGER ONE. Stupid designer stupidness. I could definitely make my own fried egg pillow. I just might, to spite them. I'm not even going to link to them, because they're so stupid.

Seriously. Not worth $66. Even for the larger one.

I got a bed! G's college bed (which is a full, not a queen). His dad dropped it off today. It's fricking high. Thick mattress, box frame, tall bed frame. It's really weird how much closer to the ceiling I am now. I've only had it for about...seven hours, but every time I walk into the bedroom, I have to roll around on the bed. I have a bed again! No more borrowed futon on the floor! It's very exciting. Soon I can start obsessing about sheets and duvets and how to hide the casters without getting a ruffly bedskirt.

Here's one more shot for you to fully appreciate the lovely late afternoon sun...at 8:12pm. So awesome!

Look, I actually cooked!

I finally made the curry! (A couple days ago.) Yes it was easy, yes I could've done this in Japan, but I was just that lazy. If you look closely, you'll notice that the kabocha is nothing but rinds. Oops. One time G and I made curry with kabocha but didn't put it in soon enough and it was hard. Guess I overcompensated.

It's no replacement for any curry house back in Japan, but it's good enough for at home in America cooking. I guess I should try to find a curry place up here.

I also made this pasta thing with bacon and fava beans. It was good, but definitely could've used more bacon and beans. Nice easy recipe, but it still took me way too long because of the bean prep. And the only grocery store that had fava beans was Whole Foods! Rargh. I went to Safeway, Trader Joe's, probably QFC too...nothing. Had to buy stupid organic hippie beans from the expensive store.

Poor presentation, I know. But it was good. And more importantly, one step closer to being able to eat carbonara again.

I like it here #1

Friday, May 25, 2007

Well, official #1:

It's 11:20pm on a Friday night, and my nasty loud street is mostly silent. A few cars whisper by. No more big rigs, no motorcycles or revving engines. Just a reminder that I don't live in the sticks anymore (ohh--sad realization--I'll miss the crazy loud frogs. And the fireflies. Aw.).

I was going to say that if this were LA, it'd be just as loud (well, without the stupid big rigs) at night, but this isn't the same as Sunset Blvd or Santa Monica Blvd (my sister's place, not mine...). I live less than a mile from the grocery store, the bank, even a movie theater, but I live in a residential area. A neighborhood, with a well-recognized name. It's unlike anything I've ever experienced. It's wonderful.

Already scheming.

Once I start making money, I'm going to try poutine! On this side of the border! Aren't you proud of me D? (I know I know, I'll try it up there eventually. I'll drag G with me.)

Hmmm.

What exactly does one say to a friend of a friend of a friend who myspace bulletins her entire friend list (which includes me) to tell us she's getting divorced? Crazy. And a little sad. It's an amicable split, but I don't think I could just lay it out there like that. I guess that's how it works these days.

Dammit.

I don't know if I should be relieved that I just re-found a sizable stack of traveler's checks or if I should be very very ashamed that I've had a month's worth of rent kicking around in a box for the past handful--no wait--six months. Even longer if you note that one set was from my trip to Malaysia, in 2005.

Oh well, it's a happy ending either way. Now I don't have to live off $50 for the month of June.

And I put together a bench! Three for three!

(Pictures later, I deserve dinner now.)

No curry tonight.

Thursday, May 24, 2007

Today was a gorgeous day. California blue skies and warm. So I IMed M (the guy I stayed with) and we went geocaching. His hobby, not mine. Yet. (In a nutshell, geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunt using GPS coordinates.) How long? For about seven hours. Seven hours of wandering through parks and the city, looking for little boxes. It's a lot of fun, and I'm not nearly as tired as I thought I'd be. Well, we didn't walk for seven hours...lots of driving here and there. The longest hike was about two hours because we had to go down this winding path to the beach.

But it was so great to be outside with a purpose under blue skies! I don't think I'm homesick, but I kept pointing out places that reminded me of home (which could be either Japan or SD. There's a drive along the coast that reminds me of Aji and Yashima.). And now it's 8:20pm, and the sun is still out. Feels like 5pm. Kind of makes me want to go back out again, maybe go take a picture of this awesome view I didn't have my camera for this afternoon (the skyline, with the needle and Mt. Rainier!). But it's just the sunlight getting to me. If it were more evening-like, I'm sure I'd be settling in for the night. This weather is super great, but it also makes me fear the cold dark winters.

Time for dinner, pictures later, I promise!

(Right, and no curry because I'm definitely too tired to mess with it. Not sure if it'll be like real J-curry (highly doubtful), but I'll settle for recreating the curry I grew up with. And hey, the directions on the box are in Japanese (and English). That's got to count for something, right?

Total Accident, I swear.

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

I currently have five kinds of cheese in my refrigerator: cream cheese, ricotta, romano, swiss, and american. Other dairy includes milk, cream, and yogurt.

I knew I liked cheese, but I didn't I was that bad.

Another "accident": buying a ten pound bag of potatoes, because it cost the same as six pounds of the unbagged ones. Mmm potatoes. Guess I'll have to get some sour cream.

Goal for tomorrow: Japanese curry for dinner. With kabocha!

Picture this:

I'm hungry but I refuse to stand up because I got blisters from walking almost six miles in zori. I seriously intend to only eat food that I can reach without standing up.

Good thing I just made a trip to Uwajimaya (Japanese/Asian food superstore) and I haven't put everything away yet. Hooray Pocky!

It's raining.

Monday, May 21, 2007

I don't think I'll mind it, but ask me again in a couple months. The endless blue of back home can't be traded for all this green. I've got a great view of trees from half of my windows. I did make this realization: even though I live on the top floor, I can't hear the rain because of the attic above me. The landlady said that it's just crawlspace, but I seem to remember there being a window up there. Oh well. It's just weird seeing the rain and hearing the traffic but not the rain.

Oh, and there are two cars parked across the street. Funny, as that isn't parking. Also funny was a guy running by, and then another guy chasing after him. Hmm. I wonder what'll happen. I'll keep an eye out for 911 calls.

Purchases: this pillow, hopefully for the green-black-white bedroom and super glue for one of my poor broken chawan. (Thankfully one from college, not a handmade Japan one.)

Salad for Dinner!

Saturday, May 19, 2007

Here's that salad I ate a few days ago on the new plates I bought. Gold star for color!

I'm proud of the plates mostly because the bowls are good for udon (once I find/make it) and the mugs feel good. I kinda wish it was a set of 6, not 4, but what can you do? Practically speaking, I don't need service for 8.

Color Ideas

Bedroom: light green (not sure if I want to lean towards yellow or blue), accented by black and white, maybe a little light blue. Like this, but no checkerboard. (Although I would totally do that in a kitchen or bathroom if I had the money and the burning desire to redo the floors):

Kitchen: As the carpet is industrial slate blue (a plus while I sit on the floor, quiet crappy once I start cooking and spilling), I think it'll have to be my blue room. What else can I do really? My plates are blue too. There's this awesome mirror I love, but I think it's only because it's reflecting the colors I want. Someday I'll have a room stylish enough for it (and the pocketbook to pay for it. Almost $200, F that.)

I'd love to sneak in some minimal red accents, like a red tea kettle or a photo of the HEP 5 roller coaster in Osaka (...the red one, with the red whales in the mall, seen it?), but I'd also settle for fitting this photo of my backyard in--just the photo, not necessarily the colors:

No clue about the living room yet. I feel like it should be warm tones, just because I'm going for blue and green in the other rooms. I wish I could furnish things with a bit more sophistication, but without a job, I suppose it's wisest to stick to ikea for now. And I'm not really a showroom sophistication sort of person anyway. Been spending too much time with the Crate and Barrel catalog. Bah.
