Confession

I am contemplating having chocolate cake for breakfast. At 11:20am. On a Thursday.

Accomplishments!

Tonight I made dinner for 10 for a meeting we had tonight. (Although with all the leftovers I have--one full pan of lasagna, and I had to force cake onto people--I easily could've fed 15.) Yay! It was a big project for me--I don't really cook for a lot of people very often, so I planned in advance (rare!) and made extra food (common!) because the group could've been anything from 7 to 14. UGH.

I made: hummus and vegetables, lasagna, and a bundt cake. It was mostly from scratch (canned tomato and beans, no-boil pasta). I enjoyed it, and I hope everyone else did.

And now I am rewarding myself with wine, with dirty dishes strewn about. I will wash them tomorrow, hangover be damned.

I have also been skimming recipes. I totally missed Compost Cookies! Man, that would've been perfect for tonight, although cookies are labor-intensive compared to a cake that doesn't require frosting.

The past few days have been clear and blue and warm, but I've been too busy to take advantage of them. Perhaps tomorrow!

Today was better than most.

Long coffee meetup with a genuinely friendly, intensely time-generous woman who is sharing some career advice.

Clear warm day in mid-October. Tank top weather, by Northwest, and even my standards.

Beautiful dusk, which almost made me enjoy the traffic, because I drove over the lake. Wish I could've taken a picture.

Some awesome bird of prey hanging out on a streetlight over the freeway, also at dusk. I'm not sure who else noticed. That means the freeway to the north over the lake has a bald eagle, and this freeway has some sort of hawk. I love it.

We got intensely bright LED streetlights...today? Possibly yesterday? (I don't know, I didn't go outside yesterday evening.) Despite the fact that they're too bright, and I feel like I'm at Disneyland...I feel like I'm at Disneyland and the novelty makes me smile. Ask me again when they do the streetlights that face our bedroom windows, but for now it makes everything look sharp and interesting at night.

Even though I dealt with a healthy dose of anti-fun today, I'd say the good definitely outweighs the bad.

Trying for more balance.

I spend way too much time reading feeds. So here's a little update for you.

It's getting colder up here, which always makes me want to cook more. We have plenty of leftovers, but still.

I'm getting over a gross cold that makes the days slip by. I should probably be in bed, but I'm at that almost recovered stage, where I'm too bored to stay in bed.

I've been considering getting a smart phone, as now a majority of my the friends I see on a regular basis have one. The old promise was to reward myself with one once I got a real job, and part of me wants to stick to that, but a lot of me wants to get familiar with new tech. I'm still running XP, for goodness sake. I'm not an intentional Luddite, I swear. Just lazy.

Sorry for the twitter weirdness, I got a little paranoid for a bit, and went private, even though most of my followers are strangers anyway. Fixed that. I was considering keeping it private so I could do more shouting, but nothing's private on the internet anymore.

My landlady has decorated the house for Halloween, which includes a candy bowl by the mailboxes. Luckily the neighbors don't like Smarties (the chalky ones, not the chocolate ones), which means more for me and the boy.

A friend got a ton of matsutake mushrooms that she's going to share with me. Hooray! I have no idea what to do with them, but it's time to comb the feeds for recipes.

I swear, I only read things that are in or linked in Google Reader now. It's just so efficient, but then I have to at least be aware that I only get my news from a very liberal (sometimes shouty) blog (good old Slog), and that other things are happening in the world. Like those Chilean miners. I know it's a big deal, because I listen to NPR during my commute, but it's even surfacing on Facebook. Interesting. I guess it's a bit of good news to combat the pink sludge spill.

One Year Later.

I finally finished The Yiddish Policeman's Union. Finally! I'm still using the CalTrain ticket from December 30, 2008 as a bookmark. I think I'll leave it in there. The book was quite good, once I got into it. But this isn't a book report. I'm just here to say how aggravating it is to turn the page anticipating a final chapter, or at least a comforting epilogue, and instead finding the Author's Note, with a few more blank pages for filler. It's always such a shock.

It definitely feels good to finish it. I was reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (another Michael Chabon novel) at the beginning of 2008 at a time where I needed the escapism. G picked this one up in September 2008 when we went down for S's wedding, and burned through it. When he passed it on, I just couldn't get into it, even though I took it with me on at least two trips down to California. But now it's done, and I can move on.

Welcome to June 2009!

I finally got a digital converter for my tiny white TV! And holy damn, I always thought the TV was shit, but in reality, the reception was shit. It's also amusing seeing a digital menu on an old box-shaped TV.

Other observations: there is a lot of god TV over here. Yes, god, not good. One of the first things I did was remove the praise channels, even though they were momentarily entertaining. I think there were at least six.

And, luddite that I am, I'm super confused that there's more than one channel 7, and they all have different shows on. One station seems to be devoted to Andy Griffith.

Maybe I'll start watching more TV now. I just got back from my grandparents' place, where I always develop a minor addiction. I actually said out loud, "Oh, it's time for Conan O'Brien!" But it was Saturday, so SNL was on.

At least now I'll be able to watch the Olympics. And that's a little bit exciting, considering how close they'll be in real life.
